HELMSTEDT X ROYAL COPENHAGEN
A CHRISTMAS GREETING TO THE OCEAN AND THE FAMILY
The best thing about Christmas is how it stops time in its tracks. We can forget which day of the week it is and spend time simply being in the moment and being together.
For Emilie Helmstedt, Christmas is a celebration of colours, and she lets out her inner child to create a truthful Christmas universe on the bottom of the ocean. Emilie dives deep into the ocean down to the corals that are losing their colours due to climate change which end up as white hard sculptures. She arranges her settings on a stylised plate of coral and creates six luminescent Christmas tableaux that form a beautiful underwater chandelier fit for a fairy tale.
With a heart beating strongly for environmental awareness, her Christmas installation is framed as a celebration of the ocean which we all have a greater responsibility to protect. Emilie envisions that her guest’s journey out to the white coral takes place in a green kayak from the NGO GreenKayak that offers a fleet of free kayaks for people to collect plastics and waste from Copenhagen’s waterways and canals.
